Carnival

This drip art painting is one of the most vibrant abstract works I have ever done.  Symbols from everything and the crashing blues and beiges seem to hold together well.  Like a carnival, it has a mix of activity and color with ideas from all around the world.   I used drip and spray with some layering and tinting, but lots of brush work to control areas of color and space.

Village at Mountain Lake (Sold)

The thing I like about this folk style painting is the view, the rough planted field in the foreground with little light and the sun reaching in on the right across the fields, the lake and the small country village with small groups of houses and barns, the church standing at the top of the hill and the dark sky giving way to the light.  Primitive style paintings like this that let us know, America is a beautiful place.

Summer Sky (Sold)

The idyllic country setting of this painting of delicate trees and  whimsical colors give it a light, airy feeling.  The country road leading up the painting is almost a pink color and the field to the right is a very soft purple.  The mountain in the background is almost part of the sky.  Barns and cottages dot across the top.  Everything makes its way back to the barns.  This American folk art painting is a mixed media using acrylic and oil pastels and large areas of tinting.

Skyler River Bend (Sold)

On the ride up to our country home in northern New York, we pass this bend in the river. Cabins line the rushing riverside which is running fast and rough because of all the stones beneath the surface.  My granddaughter’s name is Skyler, so I call it Skyler River Bend.  We see it when we are on our way to visit her, her brother, Mom & Dad, so it’s always a beautiful feeling to look at this American folk art painting.

River Camp (Sold)

This painting depicts a little red cabin in the Adirondacks that we pass on the way to our summer camp.  There are tiny country cabins all along the river.  The bold folk art shapes and bright oil pastel colors give this painting an innocent childlike look.  It looks a little like crayon and goes well with the technique and the primitive effect I’m looking for.  It’s fun, simple, bright and cheerful. It tells of a simpler uncomplicated time.

October Morning (Sold)

It is a quiet October morning on this historic farm. Everything is still and calm here.  This folk art painting has simple lines and a  minimalist, primitive quality. The watercolor paper makes a beautiful image that enhances the contrast and colors.  The tinting creates the distance with a morning haze in the background that completes the image of this quiet rural area.

Blue Ridge Horse Farm (Sold)

The simple lines and minimalist quality of this primitive style painting makes it one of my best selling folk art prints. The surface of the German watercolor paper makes a beautiful texture that enhances the contrast of the bold blues and bright whites of this rural horse farm.  The tinting is clean and creates a soft, almost watercolor look to this rolling country landscape.

After The Rain

This animated drip art painting is a good size and it is heavy with gesso and many colors of paint.  In creating this type of lively abstract image, I use more paint because on some of the layers I almost cover the complete canvas with the next color, only showing little bits of the color before it. As I get closer to the top layer I use a little less paint to show more of the last layer.  I made the movement circle, like an inner border on the blue and gray background.  Another field of yellows and oranges inside the circle required me use more control over the action of the painting. I worked a little at a time, letting it dry and then working again with tints and layers of vibrant white, black and green.
